Esce il 23 novembre il libro con l'intervista concessa da Benedetto XVI a Peter Seewald

Il Papa, la Chiesa e i segni dei tempi


Luce del mondo è il titolo con il quale sta per essere pubblicato il libro che raccoglie la conversazione di Benedetto XVI con il giornalista e scrittore tedesco Peter Seewald. La nuova opera, edita in italiano dalla Libreria Editrice Vaticana, uscirà in contemporanea in altre lingue il prossimo 23 novembre e ha come sottotitolo Il Papa, la Chiesa e i segni dei tempi. Nei 18 capitoli che lo compongono, raggruppati in tre parti - "I segni dei tempi", "Il pontificato", "Verso dove andiamo" - Benedetto XVI risponde alle più scottanti questioni del mondo di oggi. Del libro (pagine 284, euro 19,50) anticipiamo alcuni stralci.
La gioia del cristianesimo

Tutta la mia vita è sempre stata attraversata da un filo conduttore, questo:  il cristianesimo dà gioia, allarga gli orizzonti. In definitiva un'esistenza vissuta sempre e soltanto "contro" sarebbe insopportabile.

Un mendicante

Per quel che riguarda il Papa, anche lui è un povero mendicante davanti a Dio, ancora più degli altri uomini. Naturalmente prego innanzitutto sempre il Signore, al quale sono legato, per così dire, da antica amicizia. Ma invoco anche i santi. Sono molto amico di Agostino, di Bonaventura e di Tommaso d'Aquino. A loro quindi dico:  "Aiutatemi"! La Madre di Dio, poi, è sempre e comunque un grande punto di riferimento. In questo senso, mi inserisco nella Comunione dei Santi. Insieme a loro, rafforzato da loro, parlo poi anche con il Dio buono, soprattutto mendicando, ma anche ringraziando; o contento, semplicemente.

Le difficoltà

L'avevo messo nel conto. Ma innanzitutto bisognerebbe essere molto cauti con la valutazione di un Papa, se sia significativo o meno, quando è ancora in vita. Solo in un secondo momento si può riconoscere quale posto, nella storia nel suo insieme, ha una determinata cosa o persona. Ma che l'atmosfera non sarebbe stata sempre gioiosa era evidente in considerazione dell'attuale costellazione mondiale, con tutte le forze di distruzione che ci sono, con tutte le contraddizioni che in essa vivono, con tutte le minacce e gli errori. Se avessi continuato a ricevere soltanto consensi, avrei dovuto chiedermi se stessi veramente annunciando tutto il Vangelo.

Lo shock degli abusi

I fatti non mi hanno colto di sorpresa del tutto. Alla Congregazione per la Dottrina della Fede mi ero occupato dei casi americani; avevo visto montare anche la situazione in Irlanda. Ma le dimensioni comunque furono uno shock enorme. Sin dalla mia elezione al Soglio di Pietro avevo ripetutamente incontrato vittime di abusi sessuali. Tre anni e mezzo fa, nell'ottobre 2006, in un discorso ai vescovi irlandesi avevo chiesto loro di "stabilire la verità di ciò che è accaduto in passato, prendere tutte le misure atte ad evitare che si ripeta in futuro, assicurare che i principi di giustizia vengano pienamente rispettati e, soprattutto, guarire le vittime e tutti coloro che sono colpiti da questi crimini abnormi".
Vedere il sacerdozio improvvisamente insudiciato in questo modo, e con ciò la stessa Chiesa Cattolica, è stato difficile da sopportare. In quel momento era importante però non distogliere lo sguardo dal fatto che nella Chiesa il bene esiste, e non soltanto queste cose terribili.

I media e gli abusi

Era evidente che l'azione dei media non fosse guidata solamente dalla pura ricerca della verità, ma che vi fosse anche un compiacimento a mettere alla berlina la Chiesa e, se possibile, a screditarla. E tuttavia era necessario che fosse chiaro questo:  sin tanto che si tratta di portare alla luce la verità, dobbiamo essere riconoscenti. La verità, unita all'amore inteso correttamente, è il valore numero uno. E poi i media non avrebbero potuto dare quei resoconti se nella Chiesa stessa il male non ci fosse stato. Solo perché il male era dentro la Chiesa, gli altri hanno potuto rivolgerlo contro di lei.

Il progresso

Emerge la problematicità del termine "progresso". La modernità ha cercato la propria strada guidata dall'idea di progresso e da quella di libertà. Ma cos'è il progresso? Oggi vediamo che il progresso può essere anche distruttivo. Per questo dobbiamo riflettere sui criteri da adottare affinché il progresso sia veramente progresso.

Un esame di coscienza

Al di là dei singoli piani finanziari, un esame di coscienza globale è assolutamente inevitabile. E a questo la Chiesa ha cercato di contribuire con l'enciclica Caritas in veritate. Non dà risposte a tutti i problemi. Vuole essere un passo in avanti per guardare le cose da un altro punto di vista, che non sia soltanto quello della fattibilità e del successo, ma dal punto di vista secondo cui esiste una normatività dell'amore per il prossimo che si orienta alla volontà di Dio e non soltanto ai nostri desideri. In questo senso dovrebbero essere dati degli impulsi perché realmente avvenga una trasformazione delle coscienze.

La vera intolleranza

La vera minaccia di fronte alla quale ci troviamo è che la tolleranza venga abolita in nome della tolleranza stessa. C'è il pericolo che la ragione, la cosiddetta ragione occidentale, sostenga di avere finalmente riconosciuto ciò che è giusto e avanzi così una pretesa di totalità che è nemica della libertà. Credo necessario denunciare con forza questa minaccia. Nessuno è costretto ad essere cristiano. Ma nessuno deve essere costretto a vivere secondo la "nuova religione", come fosse l'unica e vera, vincolante per tutta l'umanità.

Moschee e burqa

I cristiani sono tolleranti ed in quanto tali permettono anche agli altri la loro peculiare comprensione di sé. Ci rallegriamo del fatto che nei Paesi del Golfo arabo (Qatar, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Quwait) ci siano chiese nelle quali i cristiani possono celebrare la Messa e speriamo che così accada ovunque. Per questo è naturale che anche da noi i musulmani possano riunirsi in preghiera nelle moschee.
Per quanto riguarda il burqa, non vedo ragione di una proibizione generalizzata. Si dice che alcune donne non lo portino volontariamente ma che in realtà sia una sorta di violenza imposta loro. È chiaro che con questo non si può essere d'accordo. Se però volessero indossarlo volontariamente, non vedo perché glielo si debba impedire.

Cristianesimo e modernità

L'essere cristiano è esso stesso qualcosa di vivo, di moderno, che attraversa, formandola e plasmandola, tutta la mia modernità, e che quindi in un certo senso veramente la abbraccia.
Qui è necessaria una grande lotta spirituale, come ho voluto mostrare con la recente istituzione di un "Pontificio Consiglio per la nuova evangelizzazione". È importante che cerchiamo di vivere e di pensare il Cristianesimo in modo tale che assuma la modernità buona e giusta, e quindi al contempo si allontani e si distingua da quella che sta diventando una contro-religione.

Ottimismo

Lo si potrebbe pensare guardando con superficialità e restringendo l'orizzonte al solo mondo occidentale. Ma se si osserva con più attenzione - ed è quello che mi è possibile fare grazie alle visite dei vescovi di tutto il mondo  e  anche  ai  tanti  altri  incontri  -  si  vede che il cristianesimo in questo momento sta sviluppando anche una creatività del tutto nuova [...]
La burocrazia è consumata e stanca. Sono iniziative che nascono dal di dentro, dalla gioia dei giovani. Il cristianesimo forse assumerà un volto nuovo, forse anche un aspetto culturale diverso. Il cristianesimo non determina l'opinione pubblica mondiale, altri ne sono alla guida. E tuttavia il cristianesimo è la forza vitale senza la quale anche le altre cose non potrebbero continuare ad esistere. Perciò, sulla base di quello che vedo e di cui riesco a fare personale esperienza, sono molto ottimista rispetto al fatto che il cristianesimo si trovi di fronte ad una dinamica nuova.

La droga

Tanti vescovi, soprattutto quelli dell'America Latina, mi dicono che là dove passa la strada della coltivazione e del commercio della droga - e questo avviene in gran parte di quei paesi - è come se un animale mostruoso e cattivo stendesse la sua mano su quel paese per rovinare le persone. Credo che questo serpente del commercio e del consumo di droga che avvolge il mondo sia un potere del quale non sempre riusciamo a farci un'idea adeguata. Distrugge i giovani, distrugge le famiglie, porta alla violenza e minaccia il futuro di intere nazioni.
Anche questa è una terribile responsabilità dell'Occidente:  ha bisogno di droghe e così crea paesi che gli forniscono quello che poi finirà per consumarli e distruggerli. È sorta una fame di felicità che non riesce a saziarsi con quello che c'è; e che poi si rifugia per così dire nel paradiso del diavolo e distrugge completamente l'uomo.

Nella vigna del Signore

In effetti avevo una funzione direttiva, però non avevo fatto nulla da solo e ho lavorato sempre in squadra; proprio come uno dei tanti operai nella vigna del Signore che probabilmente ha fatto del lavoro preparatorio, ma allo stesso tempo è uno che non è fatto per essere il primo e per assumersi la responsabilità di tutto. Ho capito che accanto ai grandi Papi devono esserci anche Pontefici piccoli che danno il proprio contributo. Così in quel momento ho detto quello che sentivo veramente [...]
Il concilio Vaticano II ci ha insegnato, a ragione, che per la struttura della Chiesa è costitutiva la collegialità; ovvero il fatto che il Papa è il primo nella condivisione e non un monarca assoluto che prende decisioni in solitudine e fa tutto da sé.

L'ebraismo

Senza dubbio. Devo dire che sin dal primo giorno dei miei studi teologici mi è stata in qualche modo chiara la profonda unità fra Antica e Nuova Alleanza, tra le due parti della nostra Sacra Scrittura. Avevo compreso che avremmo potuto leggere il Nuovo Testamento soltanto insieme con ciò che lo ha preceduto, altrimenti non lo avremmo capito. Poi naturalmente quanto accaduto nel Terzo Reich ci ha colpito come tedeschi e tanto più ci ha spinto a guardare al popolo d'Israele con umiltà, vergogna e amore.
Nella mia formazione teologica queste cose si sono intrecciate ed hanno segnato il percorso del mio pensiero teologico. Dunque era chiaro per me - ed anche qui in assoluta continuità con Giovanni Paolo II - che nel mio annuncio della fede cristiana doveva essere centrale questo nuovo intrecciarsi, amorevole e comprensivo, di Israele e Chiesa, basato sul rispetto del modo di essere di ognuno e della rispettiva missione [...]
Comunque, a quel punto, anche nella antica liturgia mi è sembrato necessario un cambiamento. Infatti, la formula era tale da ferire veramente gli ebrei e di certo non esprimeva in modo positivo la grande, profonda unità fra Vecchio e Nuovo Testamento.
Per questo motivo ho pensato che nella liturgia antica fosse necessaria una modifica, in particolare, come ho detto, in riferimento al nostro rapporto con gli amici ebrei. L'ho modificata in modo tale che vi fosse contenuta la nostra fede, ovvero che Cristo è salvezza per tutti. Che non esistono due vie di salvezza e che dunque Cristo è anche il Salvatore degli ebrei, e non solo dei pagani. Ma anche in modo tale che non si pregasse direttamente per la conversione degli ebrei in senso missionario, ma perché il Signore affretti l'ora storica in cui noi tutti saremo uniti. Per questo gli argomenti utilizzati da una serie di teologi polemicamente contro di me sono avventati e non rendono giustizia a quanto fatto.

Pio XII

Pio XII ha fatto tutto il possibile per salvare delle persone. Naturalmente ci si può sempre chiedere:  "Perché non ha protestato in maniera più esplicita"? Credo che abbia capito quali sarebbero state le conseguenze di una protesta pubblica. Sappiamo che per questa situazione personalmente ha sofferto molto. Sapeva che in sé avrebbe dovuto parlare, ma la situazione glielo impediva.
Ora, persone più ragionevoli ammettono che Pio XII ha salvato molte vite ma sostengono che aveva idee antiquate sugli ebrei e che non era all'altezza del Concilio Vaticano II. Il problema tuttavia non è questo. L'importante è ciò che ha fatto e ciò che ha cercato di fare, e credo che bisogna veramente riconoscere che è stato uno dei grandi giusti e che, come nessun altro, ha salvato tanti e tanti ebrei.

La sessualità

Concentrarsi solo sul profilattico vuol dire banalizzare la sessualità, e questa banalizzazione rappresenta proprio la pericolosa ragione per cui tante e tante persone nella sessualità non vedono più l'espressione del loro amore, ma soltanto una sorta di droga, che si somministrano da sé. Perciò anche la lotta contro la banalizzazione della sessualità è parte del grande sforzo affinché la sessualità venga valutata positivamente e possa esercitare il suo effetto positivo sull'essere umano nella sua totalità.
Vi possono essere singoli casi giustificati, ad esempio quando una prostituta utilizza un profilattico, e questo può essere il primo passo verso una moralizzazione, un primo atto di responsabilità per sviluppare di nuovo la consapevolezza del fatto che non tutto è permesso e che non si può far tutto ciò che si vuole. Tuttavia, questo non è il modo vero e proprio per vincere l'infezione dell'Hiv. È veramente necessaria una umanizzazione della sessualità.

La Chiesa

Paolo dunque non intendeva la Chiesa come istituzione, come organizzazione, ma come organismo vivente, nel quale tutti operano l'uno per l'altro e l'uno con l'altro, essendo uniti a partire da Cristo. È un'immagine, ma un'immagine che conduce in profondità e che è molto realistica anche solo per il fatto che noi crediamo che nell'Eucaristia veramente riceviamo Cristo, il Risorto. E se ognuno riceve il medesimo Cristo, allora veramente noi tutti siamo riuniti in questo nuovo corpo risorto come il grande spazio di una nuova umanità. È importante capire questo, e dunque intendere la Chiesa non come un apparato che deve fare di tutto - pure l'apparato le appartiene, ma entro dei limiti - bensì come organismo vivente che proviene da Cristo stesso.

L'Humanae vitae

Le prospettive della "Humanae vitae" restano valide, ma altra cosa è trovare strade umanamente percorribili. Credo che ci saranno sempre delle minoranze intimamente persuase della giustezza di quelle prospettive e che, vivendole, ne rimarranno pienamente appagate così da diventare per altri affascinante modello da seguire. Siamo peccatori. Ma non dovremmo assumere questo fatto come istanza contro la verità, quando cioè quella morale alta non viene vissuta. Dovremmo cercare di fare tutto il bene possibile, e sorreggerci e sopportarci a vicenda. Esprimere tutto questo anche dal punto di vista pastorale, teologico e concettuale nel contesto dell'attuale sessuologia e ricerca antropologica è un grande compito al quale bisogna dedicarsi di più e meglio.

Le donne

La formulazione di Giovanni Paolo II è molto importante:  "La Chiesa non ha in alcun modo la facoltà di conferire alle donne l'ordinazione sacerdotale". Non si tratta di non volere ma di non potere. Il Signore ha dato una forma alla Chiesa con i Dodici e poi con la loro successione, con i vescovi ed i presbiteri (i sacerdoti). Non siamo stati noi a creare questa forma della Chiesa, bensì è costitutiva a partire da Lui. Seguirla è un atto di obbedienza, nella situazione odierna forse uno degli atti di obbedienza più gravosi. Ma proprio questo è importante, che la Chiesa mostri di non essere un regime dell'arbitrio. Non possiamo fare quello che vogliamo. C'è invece una volontà del Signore per noi, alla quale ci atteniamo, anche se questo è faticoso e difficile nella cultura e nella civiltà di oggi.
Tra l'altro, le funzioni affidate alle donne nella Chiesa sono talmente grandi e significative che non può parlarsi di discriminazione. Sarebbe così se il sacerdozio fosse una specie di dominio, mentre al contrario deve essere completamente servizio. Se si dà uno sguardo alla storia della Chiesa, allora ci si accorge che il significato delle donne - da Maria a Monica sino a Madre Teresa - è talmente eminente che per molti versi le donne definiscono il volto della Chiesa più degli uomini.

I novissimi

È una questione molto seria. La nostra predicazione, il nostro annunzio effettivamente è ampiamente orientato, in modo unilaterale, alla creazione di un mondo migliore, mentre il mondo realmente migliore quasi non è più menzionato. Qui dobbiamo fare un esame di coscienza. Certo, si cerca di venire incontro all'uditorio, di dire loro quello che è nel loro orizzonte. Ma il nostro compito è allo stesso tempo sfondare quest'orizzonte, ampliarlo, e di guardare alle cose ultime.
I novissimi sono come pane duro per gli uomini di oggi. Gli appaiono irreali. Vorrebbero al loro posto risposte concrete per l'oggi, soluzioni per le tribolazioni quotidiane. Ma sono risposte che restano a metà se non permettono anche di presentire e riconoscere che io mi estendo oltre questa vita materiale, che c'è il giudizio, e che c'è la grazia e l'eternità. In questo senso dobbiamo anche trovare parole e modi nuovi, per permettere all'uomo di sfondare il muro del suono del finito.

La venuta di Cristo

È importante che ogni epoca stia presso il Signore. Che anche noi stessi, qui ed ora, siamo sotto il giudizio del Signore e ci lasciamo giudicare dal suo tribunale. Si discuteva di una duplice venuta di Cristo, una a Betlemme ed una alla fine dei tempi, sino a quando san Bernardo di Chiaravalle parlò di un Adventus medius, di una venuta intermedia, attraverso la quale sempre Egli periodicamente entra nella storia.
Credo che abbia preso la tonalità giusta. Noi non possiamo stabilire quando il mondo finirà. Cristo stesso dice che nessuno lo sa, nemmeno il Figlio. Dobbiamo però rimanere per così dire sempre presso la sua venuta, e soprattutto essere certi che, nelle pene, Egli è vicino. Allo stesso tempo dovremmo sapere che per le nostre azioni siamo sotto il suo giudizio.

CATOLICISMO -  Nº 719  Novembro 2010 - Ano LX

Na mais recente investida do ateísmo, o nada produziu por si mesmo o Universo!
Querem expulsar Deus do Universo. Vã tentativa. Sem o Criador de todas as coisas, absolutamente não se consegue explicar coisa alguma. Desejando viver sem Deus, o homem moderno pretende colocar-se em seu lugar e ser como que um deus. Entretanto, a verdadeira felicidade nesta Terra consiste em contemplar a imagem ou semelhança de Deus existente em todos os seres por Ele criados.

"Olhai os lírios do campo, como crescem: não trabalham nem fiam. Contudo digo-vos que nem Salomão em sua maior glória jamais se vestiu como um deles. Se pois Deus veste assim uma erva do campo, que hoje existe e amanhã é lançada ao fogo, quanto mais a vós, homens de pouca fé!" (Mt 6, 28-29).
Esta lição de Nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo é uma obra-prima de poesia, que os literatos não cessam de utilizar para produzir efeitos da mais elevada expressão estética. Além de bela em si mesma, contém ensinamentos de confiança em Deus, relativos não só às penúrias materiais, mas também aos socorros espirituais que a todo momento necessitamos. De modo especial, aplica-se àqueles que tudo abandonaram para se entregar inteiramente ao serviço de Deus, seja na carreira eclesiástica ou na vida religiosa consagrada, seja no campo específico do apostolado dos leigos: "Instaurare omnia in Christo" (Restaurar todas as coisas em Cristo), segundo a famosa perícope de São Paulo (Ef 1, 10), que São Pio X tomou como dístico de seu pontificado.
Assim, a frase "Olhai os lírios do campo!" salienta a dependência em que todas as criaturas se encontram em relação ao seu Criador, que dispôs as coisas de modo a que cada uma atinja o fim para o qual foi criada. Em outros termos, cada ser é formado de tal modo que seus elementos constitutivos já são ordenados em função desse fim, e sua felicidade consiste em alcançar esse fim. É claro que só os seres dotados de alma racional têm consciência plena dessa felicidade. Os animais irracionais sentem apenas o bem-estar resultante de todas as suas partes estarem em ordem ao seu fim; quando algo lhes falta, sofrem. Os vegetais não têm nenhuma consciência de seu ser, mas manifestam a boa ordem neles reinante pelo viço com que resplandecem. Daí a beleza do lírio, para a qual Nosso Senhor chamou a atenção. Essa beleza nos remete ao Criador, que criou o homem à sua imagem e semelhança, e colocou em toda criatura um reflexo de sua perfeição divina (vide texto de São Boaventura no quadro abaixo).
A visão que se desprende destas considerações é a de um Universo todo ordenado, que tem sentido, significado e finalidade. Se tirarmos Deus desse panorama, tudo fica sem sentido, e não há maior tormento para o homem do que perceber que sua vida perdeu o sentido, a razão de ser.
As primeiras noções do Catecismo
Na preparação para a Primeira Comunhão as crianças conheciam, no catecismo, as verdades eternas que serviriam de guia para o resto de suas vidas

Muitas vezes os grandes sábios não entendem o que, no entanto, era ensinado com simplicidade e concisão aos meninos e meninas que outrora se preparavam para a Primeira Comunhão. Considera-se hoje "atrasado" o velho sistema de perguntas e respostas, mas na verdade era muito pedagógico, pois ele inculcava na mente das crianças as verdades eternas que lhes serviriam de guia para o resto da vida. Não bastava decorar, e a explicação era feita concomitantemente, antes ou depois de os catecúmenos decorarem as respostas. Porém, decorando-as, fixava-se nas mentes e nos corações o que mais importava reter.
Permitimo-nos lembrar algumas dessas perguntas antes de tratar da questão que nos propusemos neste artigo. Ensina o Primeiro Catecismo da Doutrina Cristã, aprovado pelos bispos da província meridional do Brasil, reunidos no santuário de Nossa Senhora Aparecida em 3 de setembro de 1903 (Vozes, Petrópolis, 69ª ed., 1951):
 — Quem é Deus?
 — Deus é um espírito perfeitíssimo, eterno, criador do céu e da terra.
 — Por que Deus é eterno?
 — Deus é eterno, porque sempre existiu, não teve princípio e não terá fim.
 — Por que Deus é criador?
 — Deus é criador, porque só ele criou e pode criar todas as coisas, e por ninguém foi criado.
 — Como criou Deus o mundo?
 — Deus criou o mundo com um simples ato de sua vontade, e pode criar muitos outros mundos, porque é onipotente.
 — De que fez Deus o mundo?
 — Deus fez o mundo do nada.
Nestas cinco perguntas está explicado todo o enigma da existência do Universo. Ele cabe na cabeça de uma criança, porém não na cabeça de muitos sábios. Assim, um cientista de renome mundial escreveu recentemente um livro para provar que não é preciso recorrer a Deus para explicar a existência do Universo. E partiu precisamente da idéia do nada, afirmando que o nada produziu por si mesmo o Universo!
Ao falarmos de cientistas, assustamos logo de entrada muitos leitores, que se julgam — com razão, em grande número de casos — ignorantes em matéria de ciência. Mas tranqüilizem-se: a ciência avançou tanto no último século, que, salvo um pequeníssimo número de especialistas, a grande maioria dos mortais é mesmo ignorante dos grandes desenvolvimentos científicos. E o próprio autor deste artigo, embora tenha curso universitário, se coloca entre os que não conseguem acompanhar as novas teorias que em todo momento aparecem. Isto não o impede de abordar a questão proposta, pois, apesar da complexidade da matéria, os estudos dos cientistas desfecham em apreciações da realidade que estão ao alcance de nossos olhos, ou apelam para princípios universais que mesmo uma criança pode perceber se estão certos ou errados. E é para pessoas de cultura comum, como a maioria dos leitores desta revista, que preparamos este artigo.
"Se quiserem, podem chamar 'Deus'as leis da ciência"...
O físico inglês Stephen Hawking "é um cientista de grande fama, conhecido por sua terrível desgraça, até pelo público que não se interessa por astrofísica. Mais de uma vez foi visto na televisão com o seu pobre corpo devastado por uma doença degenerativa do sistema nervoso, que o obriga a andar numa cadeira de rodas e lhe permite comunicar-se apenas através de um sintonizador" (Stefano Zecchi no "Il Gornale", de Milão, 3/9/2010). O fato de nos condoermos com sua situação pessoal não implica em concordarmos com suas teses científicas.
Hawking nem sempre foi tão radical quanto se revela no livro O projeto grandioso (The Grand Design), recém-publicado em co-autoria com Leonard Mlodinov, do Caltech (Instituto de Tecnologia da Califórnia). O jornal "Times", de Londres, apresentou dele largos extratos no início de setembro, antes que o volume chegasse às livrarias.
No seu livro anterior, de 1988, intitulado Uma breve história do tempo, Hawking já se questionava sobre a compatibilidade entre um Deus criador e a compreensão científica do Universo, porém sem afirmá-la nem negá-la: "Se o Universo é contido em si mesmo, sem borda ou fronteira, não teria começo ou fim: simplesmente seria. Neste caso, qual o lugar de um criador?". E acrescentava: "Se descobrirmos uma teoria completa, filósofos, cientistas e o público leigo tomariam parte na discussão de por que o Universo e nós existimos. Se encontrarmos a resposta, seria o grande triunfo da razão humana, pois então conheceríamos a mente de Deus" (apud Marcelo Gleiser, Hawking e Deus: relação íntima, "Folha de S. Paulo", 12-8-2010, pág. A23).
Mas no livro The Grand Design "a tese é radical: não há necessidade de um Deus para se compreender a formação do Universo e de nossa presença nesta Terra" - comenta Zecchi em seu artigo do "Il Giornale". Hawking rejeita a teoria de Isaac Newton segundo a qual o Universo não teria podido formar-se de modo espontâneo, mas teria sido posto em movimento por Deus.
Em junho deste ano, durante uma série televisiva do Canal 4 da Inglaterra, Hawking declarou não acreditar na existência de um Deus pessoal: "A questão é: a forma pela qual o Universo teve origem resulta de uma escolha feita por Deus por razões que não podemos compreender, ou foi determinada pelas leis da ciência? Eu creio na segunda hipótese. Se quiserem, podem chamar 'Deus'as leis da ciência, mas não será um Deus pessoal com o qual [os homens] poderiam se encontrar, e ao qual poderiam apresentar pedidos"(apud Pietro Vernizzi, site Il Sussidiario, 3-9-2010).
Seria uma forma peculiar de panteísmo, que não estaria propriamente no Universo, mas nas leis da ciência que o regem; e que, segundo ele pensa, pré-existem em relação ao Universo e permitem que ele surja espontaneamente do nada. Hawking afirma: "A criação espontânea é a razão pela qual existe alguma coisa e não o nada, pela qual o Universo existe, pela qual nós existimos. Graças à lei da gravidade, o Universo pode criar-se e se cria do nada. É inútil, portanto, apelar para Deus como causa, para fazê-lo mover o céu e acionar a mola do mecanismo do Universo".
O "nada" de onde tudo vem...
Durante uma série televisiva do Canal 4 da Inglaterra, Stephen Hawking declarou não acreditar na existência de um Deus pessoal

Em dois artigos na "Folha de S. Paulo", o brasileiro Marcelo Gleiser, professor de Física teórica no Dartmouth College (Hanover, EUA), rebate as teses de Hawking do ponto de vista científico. No artigo de 12 de setembro, já citado, ele indica a procedência dessas teses:
"Hawking afirma que tem novos argumentos que colocam Deus para escanteio de vez. Será?
"A idéia dele, que já circula desde os anos 70, vem do casamento da relatividade [de Einstein] e da mecânica quântica para explicar a origem do Universo, isto é, como tudo veio do nada.
"Primeiro, usamos as propriedades atrativas da gravidade para mostrar que o cosmo é uma solução com energia zero (o 'nada' de onde tudo vem) das equações que descrevem sua evolução.
"Segundo, como na mecânica quântica (que descreve elétrons, átomos etc.) tudo flutua, o Universo pode ser resultado de uma flutuação de energia nula a partir de um universo que 'contém'todos os universos possíveis, o multiverso".
Gleiser comenta:
"É lamentável que físicos como Hawking estejam divulgando teorias especulativas como quase concluídas. A euforia na mídia é compreensível: o homem quer ser Deus.
"O desafio das teorias a que Hawking se refere é justamente estabelecer qualquer traço de evidência observacional, até agora inexistente. Não sabemos nem mesmo se essas teorias fazem sentido. Certas noções, como a existência de um multiverso, não parecem ser testáveis".
Ora, uma teoria científica só pode ser aceita se forem apresentadas comprovações experimentais. Por isso, conclui Gleiser nesse artigo: "A existência de uma teoria final é incompatível com o caráter empírico da física, baseado na coleta gradual de dados. Não vejo como poderemos ter certeza de que uma teoria final é mesmo final. Como nos mostra a história da ciência, surpresas ocorrem a toda hora. Talvez esteja na hora de Hawking deixar Deus em paz".
Gleiser toca num ponto para o qual acenamos aqui apenas de passagem: Sendo a inteligência do homem limitada, por mais que avancem os estudos da física, jamais o homem chegará à compreensão final, última, da matéria, do fenômeno da vida, da alma espiritual; numa palavra, do Universo criado. Só a mente divina compreende tudo até o fim. Por mais que o homem progrida nos seus conhecimentos, desfechará sempre no mistério, que lhe abrirá novas portas para a investigação, sem que jamais chegue à compreensão total e final.
Com Deus é diferente. Não só foi capaz de criar este mundo, com todas as suas complexidades, como poderia criar muitos outros mundos, porque é onipotente. Isso, que desconserta os sábios, as crianças aprendem no Catecismo...

Em sua recensão do livro de Hawking, Stefano Zecchi observa que ele apresenta uma segunda ordem de argumentos para tentar mostrar que não há nenhum intuito sapiencial que postule a intervenção de um ser divino na existência do Universo: "Hawking recorda a descoberta, em 1992, de um planeta que orbita uma estrela de modo semelhante ao da Terra em torno do Sol. Isto confirma, a seu juízo, que o caso terrestre não é único. Ora, considerando que é altamente provável que não só existam outros planetas semelhantes à Terra, mas inclusive outros universos, Hawking se pergunta: se Deus tivesse querido criar o Universo com a finalidade de criar o homem, que sentido teria acrescentar todo o resto?".
É precisamente a este tema que Marcelo Gleiser consagra o segundo artigo que escreveu, sob o título "Quão rara é a vida?" ("Folha de S. Paulo", 19-9-2010, pág. A23). Diz ele:
"Outro argumento que Hawking usou é que o Universo é especialmente propício à vida, em particular à vida humana. Mais uma vez vejo a necessidade de apresentar um ponto de vista contrário. Tudo o que sabemos sobre a evolução da vida na Terra aponta para a raridade dos seres vivos complexos. Estamos aqui não porque o Universo é propício à vida, mas apesar de sua hostilidade.
"Note-se que, ao falarmos sobre vida, temos de distinguir entre vida primitiva (seres unicelulares) e vida complexa. Vida simples, bactérias de vários tipos e formas, deve mesmo ser abundante no Cosmos".
Gleiser aceita, portanto, a existência de seres unicelulares espalhados pelo Cosmos. Mas não há nenhum fato que comprove isso, posto que, como ele mesmo admite e é óbvio, "o único exemplo de vida que conhecemos" é aqui na Terra. Em todo caso, ele prossegue:
"Devemos lembrar que seres multicelulares são mais frágeis, precisando de condições estáveis por longos períodos. Não é só ter água e a química correta. O planeta precisa ter uma órbita estável e temperaturas que não variem muito. Só temos as quatro estações e temperaturas estáveis porque nossa Lua é pesada. Sua massa estabiliza a inclinação do eixo terrestre (a Terra é um pião inclinado de 23,5°), permitindo a existência de água líquida durante longos períodos. Sem a Lua, a vida complexa seria muito difícil.
"A Terra tem também dois 'cobertores' que a protegem contra a radiação letal que vem do espaço: o seu campo magnético e a camada de ozônio. Viver perto de uma estrela não é moleza. Precisamos de seu calor, mas ele vem com muitas outras coisas nada favoráveis à vida.
"Quem afirma que o Universo é propício à vida complexa deve dar uma passeada pelos outros planetas e luas do nosso Sistema Solar.
"Ademais, o pulo para a vida multicelular inteligente também foi um acidente dos grandes. A vida não tem um plano que a leva à inteligência. A vida quer apenas estar bem adaptada ao seu ambiente. Os dinossauros existiram por 150 milhões de anos sem construir rádios ou aviões. Portanto, mesmo que exista vida fora da Terra, a vida inteligente será muito rara. Devemos celebrar nossa existência por sua raridade, e não por ser ordinária".
Não deixa de causar perplexidade que uma mente tão privilegiada como a de Hawking não tenha presente dados tão conhecidos como os que Gleiser recorda. E nem mesmo se pergunta como é que da matéria inanimada se passou para os primeiros seres vivos unicelulares, e daí todo o resto, até chegar à vida racional. Não trataremos aqui da explicação dada pela teoria de Darwin, pois nos desviaria desta temática. De qualquer modo, termina aqui a explanação de Gleiser, sem dúvida por desejar permanecer no seu campo próprio de cientista e não ser acusado de adentrar pela filosofia e teologia. Mas nós, que não estamos adstritos ao campo das ciências naturais, podemos — e devemos — fazê-lo, posto que elas não esgotam a explicação do Universo.'
Finalidade do homem: a contemplação sacral do Universo

Após mencionar a pergunta de Hawking sobre por que Deus criou todo o Universo, se seu intuito fosse apenas colocar o homem num planeta adequado para a vida humana, Stefano Zecchi observa judiciosamente: "Qual o sentido, qual o significado do Universo, do homem? A pesquisa científica tenta (sempre tentou) prender numa jaula esse fastidioso, cientificamente inoportuno significado [do Universo] e jogar fora a chave. Mas enquanto existir o homem, essa jaula nunca poderá ser trancada, porque, enquanto existir o homem, que tem o lume da razão, ele não renunciará a perguntar-se sobre o significado da vida e da morte, do mal e da beleza".
Aí está a resposta para a pergunta de Hawking: Deus não fez o mundo apenas para atender às necessidades vegetativas e animais do homem, mas para que ele, contemplando o Universo, conhecesse, amasse e servisse o seu Criador, e nessa contemplação sacral alcançasse o grau de felicidade possível nesta Terra, prelúdio da felicidade eterna no Céu.
O leitor encontrará valiosíssimas considerações sobre o assunto no livro A inocência primeva e a contemplação sacral do universo no pensamento de Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira (Artpress, São Paulo, 2008, 320 pp.), cuja leitura recomendamos vivamente. É desse livro que extraímos o trecho de São Boaventura, no quadro acima).
É uma pena que este livro não esteja ainda publicado em inglês, para enviarmos um exemplar ao professor Stephen Hawking. Poderia ajudá-lo a resolver o problema criteriológico em que se debate, o qual é muito mais grave que a doença neurológica atroz que o atormenta. Que Deus tenha pena de sua alma e de seu corpo!
E aqui entra mais uma vez o papel da teologia, que soube compendiar os mais altos princípios em fórmulas lapidares, e as oferece às crianças a partir do despertar da razão. No Catecismo de preparação para a Primeira Comunhão, uma pergunta fundamental e uma resposta simples:
— Para que fim foi criado o homem?
— O homem foi criado para conhecer, amar e servir a Deus neste mundo, e depois gozá-lo para sempre no outro.
Isto é, na vida eterna e bem-aventurada, vendo a Deus Uno e Trino face a face, convivendo com os anjos e os santos; especialmente com aquela Virgem coroada de doze estrelas, Maria Santíssima, que junto ao supremo Senhor Jesus Cristo — a Segunda Pessoa da Santíssima Trindade — reinará com Ele por todos os séculos sem fim.


As criaturas são vestígios, representações e sinais que nos ajudam a ver a Deus
Do Itinerário da Mente para Deus:
As criaturas são, efetivamente, uma sombra, um eco e uma pintura daquele Primeiro Princípio potentíssimo, sapientíssimo e boníssimo — daquele que é a eterna fonte, a luz, a plenitude, a causa, o exemplar e a ordenação de tudo. Elas são os vestígios, as aparências, as representações e os sinais divinamente apresentados aos nossos olhos para nos ajudarem a ver a Deus na criação (op. cit. II, 11).
Cego é, por conseguinte, quem não é iluminado por tantos e tão vivos resplendores espalhados na criação. É surdo quem não acorda por tão fortes vozes. É mudo quem em presença de tantas maravilhas não louva o Senhor. É insensato, enfim, quem com tantos e tão luminosos sinais não reconhece o primeiro Princípio.
Abre, pois, os olhos e inclina o ouvido de teu espírito, desata teus lábios e dispõe teu coração para que, em todas as criaturas, vejas, ouças, louves e ames a teu Deus, se não quiseres que todo o universo se levante contra ti. Um dia toda a criação se erguerá contra os insensatos (Sap. 5, 21), ao passo que será motivo de glória aos sensatos, os quais podem dizer com o profeta: Senhor, a visão de tuas criaturas me encheu de gozo. Exulto perante o espetáculo de tuas mãos. Como são grandiosas, Senhor, as tuas obras! Tudo fizeste com sabedoria. Toda a terra está cheia de teus bens (op. cit. I, 15).
As perfeições invisíveis de Deus, desde a criação do mundo, se vêem visivelmente através do conhecimento que as criaturas dele nos dão. De maneira que são indesculpáveis (Rom. I, 20) os que não querem considerar tais coisas e recusam, com isso, reconhecer, bendizer e amar a Deus na criação, porque estes não querem passar das trevas à admirável luz de Deus (op. cit. II, 13).

In Spain at Sagrada Familia Queen Sophia refused to kneel before GOD and receive the Body of her Divine Saviour in the manner that the same Divine Savior’s Vicar on earth has pointed to as the most appropriate.

A friend sent this and I must, in justice, share it with everyone (edited).
As much as we would like it or suppose it, Queen of Spain never converted to Catholicism….
Remember, they even had a double wedding, one catholic, one orthodox, as forbidden as that may be in general. It still is common practice in Greece.
She however is by far the best and most faithful member in the Royal Family, and she does not fear to be unpopular in shabby Spain, even on the usual social issues ….
So the way she received communion is the orthodox one, and none other she would accept. And receiving communion is according to can. 844 § 3.
I was unaware that the Orthodox received in the hand.  I thought they received under both kind and directly in the mouth through the use of a spoon.
Nevertheless, I happily receive correction in this matter if this is the reason why the Queen received in that manner.   At the same time, when one is in Rome, one does best to receive as the Romans.  When I go to am Eastern Catholic Church and receive the Sacrament, I receive in their manner of receiving.  Food for thought.

I suggest you watch the video from the Barcelona mass. The picture of
the queen is a little misleading. She wasn’t at the kneeler in front
of the Pope. He went over to her and she was on a platform above him
in a very awkward position. I doubt she was being disrespectful.

    Her head should have been covered, too. I don’t know the protocol for royalty, but I know the Pope is the only one who should wear white. The same at a wedding, only the bride wears white. It is considered rude to detract from the main attraction.

    One has to wonder what goes through the minds of such people. Even many unbelievers are impressed by the fundamental kindness of the Pope. Good manners alone would seem to indicate that one should humor the dear old gentlemen.
    Once again I feel like I did when that nut case girl jumped the Pope (and broke the elderly cardinal’s leg let’s not forget). Here I would love to go and receive communion from the Pope, and this silly woman wants to make a statement.
    (BTW Father, the response from the site this morning is slow as the proverbial).

    There are already (7:30 a. m. EST) 46 comments on this matter over at Rorate Coeli. The upshot is that none of know the state of mind of the Queen or the HF. One important point is that the latter has left it licit to receive in the hand. He has the authority to change that but has declined to exercise it. Not only are we ignorant of what these parties think, but we are even more deeply ignorant of what God might be willing to bring out of this (overall, trans-Church) confusion. Whereas I might find it immensely satisfying to have every modernist-altar-girl-filled-protestant-hymn-singing parish purged away tomorrow, that might, in some way known only in Heaven, rip up a lot of wheat in the process.

    Well, I still don’t understand why the King wasn’t excommunicated for signing that abortion bill into law, in recent months, or perhaps it was last year. Either way, Lots of people opined about his powerlessness and the role of the king, etc,but as far as I can see, he did what was forbidden very explicitly by the church. Does anyone know the law I’m talking about?

    The protocol is, I think, for Catholic royal women to wear a white mantilla, and non-Catholics black. The Queen ‘converted’ to Catholicism from Greek Orthodoxy to marry. If she became a Greek Catholic (rather than a Roman-rite Catholic) perhaps she feels obliged to receive standing as Greek Catholics do, although they do not receive in the hand.

    @Faith: Catholic queens are permitted to wear white in the Pope’s presence. BUT… not bending the knee to receive the King of kings– all I can say is I hope she was impeded by some ailment.

    Dear traditionalistorganist,
    According to this article http://www.catholicnews.com/data/stories/cns/1000822.htm from “Catholic News Service”, the King was “constitutionally required” to sign it. So my question naturally would be, “What kind of a ‘constitution’ is that???!!!”
    As for the Queen, let me just say that it would be great if we all prayed for her. She needs a really good spiritual father (as everyone does!). She married the King, she became a Catholic, so she (it seems to me) is now a Catholic. It happens all the time among royals. The only excuse I can manage is that perhaps her knees are bothering her. What I simply cannot understand, though, was her overall manner in the photo. I am going to have to report her to Mantilla the Hon!

    I agree with S Petersen,
    The Holy Father has not made it illicit to recieve the Blessed Sacrament in the hand and standing.
    While it most certainly seems that the Queen should recieve the Body of God in the manner that the Holy Father prefers, and it does strike one as a shabby move, until the Supreme Pontiff abolishes the seemingly irreverent practice of Communion in the hand and standing, then the faithful may and will recieve his Body in this manner.
    I personally believe that reception in this manner is gravely sacriligious, but who am I?

    Judging by how awkward the queen looks, it looks like she had absolutely no clue as to what she was doing. Was she instructed ahead of time about the Holy Father’s preference for distributing Holy Communion? Do we know for sure that she actually refused to kneel at the prie-dieu, or was she simply receiving as she has been accustomed to doing for a number of years now? While the queen is certainly old enough to remember kneeling to receive Holy Communion, there is so much that has been lost in the confusion of the aftermath of Vatican II. She may very well have thought she was doing what she was supposed to do. I’d be interested in knowing if there was or will be a response from the royal family or not.
    That said, I must say that the looks of the priests in the background are priceless!

    Some of us are unable to kneel. We would like to kneel but we can’t.
    And Fr. Z has previously said that it is not required by canon law for women to cover their heads so why should the queen have to wear a mantilla if woman in general don’t?

    Aargh, now I notice that while trying to teach etiquette on this august blog, I have mangled traditionalorganist’s name…. Sorry! (But I still wish I knew how to send Her Majesty a photograph of “Mantilla the Hon”, who is a raving beauty, and who could have given good pointers on proper dress for Spanish ladies [perhaps a longer hemline, though, than Mantilla wears]… sigh…)

    To clear up a quick thing….
    Traditionally all persons are to wear black in the presence of the Holy Father. It is a sign of respect. There are two queens who have traditionally had an indult to wear white. The queen of Spain being one. So, to see her wearing white is not a shock. The shock comes with her being so blatant in her disrespect for the wishes of another sovereign. The Holy Father has requested that all who receive the Sacred Species from him are to kneel and receive on the tongue. Not an unreasonable request. However, it would seem that the Queen of Spain would think that she is somehow exempt from respecting the wishes of a fellow sovereign. Would the Holy Father show blatant disrespect to the Crown of Spain when he visits? No. As a matter of fact, he did not at any point.
    It goes without saying that one should show proper respect for the Blessed Sacrament when receiving, however, I must say that technically she was not receiving in a manner that was disrespectful, because it has become almost universal to receive in the hand and is allowed by the Church. (This statement does not mean that I support the reception of Holy Communion in the hand. I do not. I believe that the Sacred Species should be received on knees and on the tongue. It is my practice to do so, communion rail or not.)
    That does NOT mean however that she can simply show disrespect for the wishes of the Holy Father, which is the larger issue. Queen Sophia showed very bad protocol. At least one person noticed.

    I must stand corrected….the indult to wear white has traditionally been extended to all Catholic Monarchs, however it has become an optional practice.

    Don’t worry, traditionalorganist is not my real name :-) I remember that article. It seems to me that the story of King Baudouin of Belgium is one of real kingly heroism. I would ask, what would happen to the King Juan Carlos had he not signed the bill into law? I likewise don’t understand how the bishops could let the King slide. I know he’s not a monarch “of old,” in terms of power, but this seems to have been an opportunity for some real heroism on his part. It’s unfortunate but true that abortion in Europe is much less of an issue, in terms of public activism, than in the U.S.

    Yes, that is possible, but I doubt she had a bad tongue and was unable to recieve on it.

    I guess, traditionalorganist, that there’s no way we can know the best answers to those questions that you so properly ask. It all gives the impression that secularism has taken over, not just in Europe but probably all over the world.
    The great hero of Spain, Ruy Díaz de Bivar [El Cid], received kneeling and on the tongue before every battle. His military chaplain and Bishop, the fighting bishop Don Jerónimo, raised the staff of his bishop’s cross and smote, in the midst of the jewelled helmet, through the armour, through the body, until the two halves of the Moor and the horse both fell on either side of the brook that runs through the Great Green Meadow….{just a tag-line or two from the Spanish National Epic which is Catholic from beginning to end)
    Those were the days, my friend!

    The queen was in an elevated plataform and didn’t know that she would receive the communion from the Pope in her place (you can see her surprise at the videos of the Mass). She tryed to receive the Lord reverently, in a very unconfortable position for an old person.
    Queen Sophia is one of the most devout monarchs.

    Mashenka, I love how you bring El Cid into this! I actually wrote my thesis in College on him! I’ve forgotten so much, but it is quite Catholic (and not very politically correct for these days either). We must pray for Spain, that she may return to her roots and give the world more magnificent saints!
  24. 1. Her oldest impulses are Greek Orthodox – standing for Communion.
    2. Receiving at the Communion rail as a young Catholic convert, she would always have had the priest standing higher than her. In the picture, all the priests are lower than her and she is on a platform.
    3. Obviously she had to decide to do something, and decided that sparing the short Holy Father the attempt to reach up to her mouth past the priedieu was the right thing to do. I’m surprised she didn’t drop anything.
    4. I don’t know why she didn’t wear her pretty white “I’m a Catholic monarch” mantilla. I see it on her more often outside Spain than inside it.
    5. I think she miscalculated, myself. And that’s not surprising, because a lot of us keep banging into walls of confusion about what’s the right thing to do. Even a queen can find herself lurching around, not sure what’s going on, only figuring out afterward that you did something you shouldn’t have.
    6. We don’t know what bad advice she may have been given by churchmen or protocol officers. Converts often feel even more unsure about these things than people raised Catholic, and are particularly vulnerable to bad advice because they don’t trust their guts to be right. I’m not sure what the constitutional constraints on her may be, either.

    Re: the pope’s visit — It’s very noticeable that neither the King nor the Queen wore any of their more ceremonial or folkloric or historical formal outfits (of which they’ve got plenty, and in which they look good), despite the fact that this was a ceremonial occasion. So apparently the Spanish government or their advisers wanted them both to dress in business suits as civic monarchs, and not to do anything too Catholic-looking. (Probably out of some misguided concession to Spanish Muslims and atheists, but who knows? Maybe for some misguided attempt at EU cred, for all I know.)

    We may dislike the fact that the Queen of Spain did not adhere to the “reform of the reform” posture, but the fact of the matter is that she received in the hand as Catholics in Spain are allowed by the Holy Apostolic See to do. So, receiving in the hand is licit.
    Also, perhaps the Queen is not aware that the Pope is now requiring people who receive Communion from him to do so kneeling. She has always received from Popes while standing. She may have understood that the kneeler was there for the Consecration only. Furthermore, she is 72 years old, and perhaps has knee arthitis.
    In any case, if the Pope really wants to have people not receiving in the hand and kneeling, he has to first change the laws of the Church, and that is something that he can do, you know, being as he is the supreme legislator in the Church. It would be a good legislative change. Why he has not legislated to that effect is for me a mystery.
    But, while he fails to legislate, his suggestion that people only receive on the tongue remains just that, a suggestion. It would be wrong for him to deny Communion to someone because that person has chosen to receive in one of the forms allowed by the Church’s own laws.
    As for the kneeling part, the universal law of the Church allows conferences of bishops to set the manner of reception (kneeling or standing). No one is to be denied Communion because he chooses to kneel, even when the conference adopted standing as the standard posture.
    The Pope, on the other hand, decided that he would only distribute Communion to people kneeling, so as to promote that form of reception. But if he really wanted to make this form mandatory, he could simply legislate to that effect. So, the queen of Spain received in the form allowed by her episcopal conference. Nothing illicit there.
    As for the pope’s decision that he would not give Communion but to people who chose to receive the Sacrament kneeling and on the tongue, that obviously applies to us who are common people. We have no right to receive directly from the Supreme Pontiff.
    On the other hand, if the Pope is visiting a country and this country has a Catholic monarch and a Catholic queen consort, and the Pope celebrates Mass in the presence of his royal hosts, then the Royal Catholic Couple, provided they do not do anything illicit, do has the legitimate expectation of receiving Communion directly from the Father of Princes and Kings. So, the Pope could not be expected to create a diplomatic incident by refusing the Queen of Spain Communion, especially when, strictly speaking, she had under current Canon Law the right to stand and the right to receive on the hand.
    Only the pope, as legislator, can put an end to those rights. But he has failed to do so for the time being.

The first to receive Communion from the Holy Father (kneeling and on the tongue) were Crown Prince Felipe, heir to the Spanish throne, and his wife, Crown Princess Letizia. Letizia wore white, but did not have her head covered-I don’t think I’ve ever seen a picture of her wearing a mantilla.
    I was also thinking of Queen Sofia’s Greek Orthodox roots, though she has been a Catholic since her marriage to Juan Carlos.

Besides, do we know if the pope knew this matter when he met them prior to Mass? No one really knows, so I suggest in charity this is best left alone……

  35. There’s a big analysis article in a Spanish newspaper, with two different verbs for the two different ways to receive Communion (handy to know!). They agree that Juan Carlos is very serious about receiving Communion only in a state of grace, which apparently has meant that he hasn’t received on several big occasions but then went to Confession real quick and received afterward in private. (If I were a constitutional monarch dealing with politicians, it would probably be very easy to get too angry to receive, right before or during Mass.)
    Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia did use the kneeler for Communion at the Compostela Mass. The article describes the Queen’s move as “producing a little pirouette of approximation”, so they must have thought it was an awkward move also.
    Also, apparently the Queen never eats flesh meat, because she made a vow to that effect in 1964 when her father died, for the good of his soul. So she’s not a godless impious hussy, and people should be nice. :)

    As for the King’s choice of not presenting himself for Communion, that is is no problem at all. People start supposing that he did not receive It as a political gesture, but that’s just crazy. He did not receive It because you only receive it when you are in a state of grace and properly disposed.
    It is precisely this misguided attitude (that believes – if you don’t receive you are not a good Catholic, you are at fault), that pressures many people into unworthy and sacrilegous reception of Holy Communion. It is a grave sin to receive Communion when not ready to do so. One needs not only to be fasting, but to be in the state of grace.
    Perhaps His Majesty has not gone to Confession since signing the abortion statute. It is even possible, perhaps, that he hasn’t reached the point of being contrite about it, so that he cannot be absolved in Sacramental Confession yet. Perhaps he still needs to repent his signature, wishing he had not done it and proposing to try not to do a similar thing in the future.
    So, it is possible that he knows he sinned badly and can’t receive Communion but still has to come to the point of being contrite and penitent and of receiving the Sacrament of Penance.
    Perhaps he was not in state of grace for other reason. Perhaps he, as I do, likes to adhere to the old, longer, Eucharistic fast.
  38. One more thing from that Spanish article (imagine an American article analyzing one’s own pattern of Communion reception! Eek!). The Spanish media, by request, usually don’t show their royal family at Communion time, whether they have Communion taken to them (as is the King and Queen’s privilege) or whether they stand in line. So normally, this would be a moment of comparative quiet and privacy for the King and Queen. This time, all of a sudden it’s cameras and flash-flash-flash! from the international media, who don’t know the usual way of doing things or don’t care. So there’s another reason the poor lady might lose her composure.
    Shutting up now! Especially since I only know what I saw in the Spanish papers.

    But the late King of the Belgians was in a simialr situation in Belgium when alive, The parliament passed the abortion bill and when they did King Bourdan (? cant spell) stepped aside as king so that he did not have to sign the bill into law. Smart law as he did his temporary abdication. Remarkable man and I think up for future canonisation – a daily Mass ger like de Gaulle I think. The King was a living saint and seen as such by the Belgians. But he had a good solution which Juan Carlos maybe should have followed if he really believed abortion bill was against catholic morality.

    I have two bad knees. I look healthy. If I knelt down, I have trouble getting up. We must not judge. As to the white, queens can wear white if they are Catholic. Black is for non-queens and non-Catholics. As to the mantilla, no one wears head-gear at the NO. I hate the changes myself and feel that the lack of decorum is part of the “dumbing down” of manners. However, one does not have all the information. I think that Mrs. Bush was not dressed appropriately when the Pope came to America. The great models for dress in the last century were Mrs. Kennedy, wearing black and mantilla, and Princess Grace. We, including the Spanish, have lost our sense of occasion and our sense of homage.

    The Spanish Constitution makes it impossible for the King to refuse to sign a law that has been passed by both the Spanish Houses of Parliament, irrespective of his wishes. The King has certain other authorities, but not to refuse the “democratic will of the majority”. Unlike the unique circumstances in Belgium that permitted King Baudouin to abdicate for one day, no such possibility is available to the Spanish Monarch – had he refused to have signed this would have been a constitutional crisis of such magnitude that it would likely have brought about the collapse of the monarchy but would not have prevented abortion being legalised.
    Precisely because of this the Spanish Bishops issued a statement explaining and absolving the King from the moral responsibility of signing this into law.

  51. Perhaps it’s just me, but I can’t see the Holy Father, or someone like Bishop Schneider, who has been a real champion on changing hearts on how we receive, approving the ridicule and mocking, or even really drawing attention to this.
    I don’t see how we can pass any judgment on the motive of the Queen. The CCC would have us interpret the actions of our neighbor in the best possible light. There are several good points about why she wasn’t kneeling (like bad knees) and why she may have extended her hands (difficulty of stretching out like a crane when she couldn’t kneel).

One has to wonder why the Pope’s chief of protocol didn’t make sure that the Queen was told what was expected.

    It needs to be pointed out that the Queen did kneel for the Pope’s blessing at the end of Mass. He had walked over to her and the King and she came forward and kneeled, with a little bit of difficulty, and bowed her head and received his blessing.
    The fact that she did it for his blessing suggests that she received Communion standing but bowing because that the custom with which she’s familiar.

    Catholic queens have the “privilege du blanc”, that is, of wearing white before the Pope.
    As far as a mantilla, I have seen women receiving Communion from the Pope with uncovered heads at Papal masses. or for that matter, acting as readers. (I personally don’t think either practice is appropriate.) And I’ve also seen Arabic men wearing their burnooses over their heads receiving Communion from him. (Orthodox monks remove the klobuk and rest it on their shoulders when receiving Communion.)
    It could also be that Queen Sophia, as has been mentioned, might have trouble kneeling. We don’t now, but it’s not ours to judge her behavior. Christian charity requires we attribute the best motives to other people’s actions.
    Also, as a side note, remember that Her Spanish Majesty was Orthodox for a large part of her life, where the universal custom is to receive standing, though not in the hand.
    As far as her becoming a Greek Catholic, I don’t know, but I HAVE heard that Crown Prince Juan Pablo was baptized by a Melkite priest. Along the same lines, the Duke of Edinburgh has quietly returned to the practice of the Orthodox faith. I don’t know how true either story is.

And my last 2 cents is as an outsider, not Spanish, I always thought it beautiful to see the mantillas on women in Spain. I thought them amongst the most respectful and traditional.     She was following the example of her aunt St. Elizabeth the New-Martyred Abbess (all royal titles and earthly honors are extinguished by tonsure) who founded the Martha-Mary Convent of Mercy. By the time St. Elizabeth was martyred, over 100 women had been tonsured not as nuns, but as “Stavrophore Sisters of Charity” and were dedicated to active works of mercy–something revolutionary in Orthodoxy.

    The “don’t judge” bug has made it’s way into the argument. How is making an observation judging? In all of the reading, I don’t see anyone saying that she’s a heretic. What I’ve seen are observations to the fact, and it is a fact, that Queen Sophia did not follow the request of the Holy Father when it comes to presenting oneself for Holy Communion. That much we can agree on.
    As for “her knees…” It has been documented that she knelt down when she met the Holy Father earlier. So, apparently kneeling is not an issue, except as Mass. And to continue the theme, if she is sooooooo much taller than the “shortish” Holy Father, then even if on a platform, kneeling would present itself as a means to level the playing field as a matter of height.
    Finally, as for protocol….Do any of you seriously believe that she was not briefed by her people on the proper actions when in the presence of the Holy Father? This would include how to receive Holy Communion. Just because she is a monarch, doesn’t mean that she’s above reproach. She didn’t get confused. Too many things don’t add up.     The Pope gave Holy Communion in the hand to a woman who was standing and not wearing a mantilla. Did he compromise his principles for her? If so, attack him as well as her. If not, I think there’s a lot of over-reaction about this particular reception of the Blessed Sacrament.

    Nice try: the “woman” the pope gave communion to just happens to be a queen. And I wouldn’t call the pope’s preferences with how people receive communion from him his “principles”. His principles I’m sure are the Church’s principles in this matter. And, he is not so stupid as to insist on his preferences over his principles when put to the test like this and cause even greater scandal. What’s curious to me is when the sort of people who don’t generally seem concerned about the Church’s principles suddenly rush to tout them in matters like these.

    And the Pope is a king. Have we forgotten that he is the Sovereign of Vatican City State? Protocol would dictate a certain matter of decorum.
    On the other hand, I don’t have much time for kings and queens, being an American. I find the whole idea of Monarchy to be a little outdated and to be quite honest, I think that the idea of one person lording over a whole group of people to be repugnant. I suppose that is another conversation altogether. To the contrary, that doesn’t mean that I won’t show respect, I most certainly would, but I don’t think that Queen Sophia showed much respect to The Holy Father.

Both Benedict XVI and Queen Sofia have hard rows to hoe. Lighten up, people! I am a non-Spring Chicken who kneels to receive, even when it embarasses the priest who is not expecting it. And, I’ll continue to kneel until I can’t anymore. For me, I am not kneeling to be approved of by Traditionalists (of any flavour), but I am kneeling before MY monarch: The King of Kings. Long may He reign!! In 1917 the Church dispensed the requirement of head covering for women…all women–royal or regular. I imagine that those bishops and priests in the photograph were really gawking at that rarest of sights: A faithful Catholic doing the best she could in a country rapidly losing its Catholic identity and a Church where liturgical lunacy is the norm. Lay off the queen! You ought to be glad she showed up at all, considering that most Catholics in Europe don’t even go to Mass. Basta!!

Right now, the Queens of Spain and Belgium and the Grand Duchess of Luxemborg (and I think the Princess of Savoy) may wear white during formal meetings with the Pope. I don’t understand why the Princesses of Monaco and Lichtenstein don’t have this privilege though.
    Anyway, I was always under the impression that Sofia is a Catholic, but that she converted after her wedding. Sofia is quite socially conservative – she does not approve of abortion and euthenasia and said she can’t understand why people are proud to be gay.     Queen Sofia, then Princess Sofia of Greece, indeed converted to from the Orthodox Church to Catholicism and is today a Catholic in full comunion with Rome and a member of the Latin Church.
    As a Catholic, the Queen routinely expresses her filial submission to the Supreme Pontiff by kissing his hand/ring, something she wouldn’t do if she retained her Orthodox faith. Also, it would be unthinkable for her to receive Holy Communion exept in danger of death were she an Orthodox.
    As for the matter of the wedding with then Prince Juan Carlos, there was indeed the toleration of a double wedding (I don’t know if Juan Carlos received special dispensation for that or if it was just an informal toleration). Since the then princess was the daughter of the Greek Sovereign and the wedding was in Greece, and given that the Orthodox religion was the official State religion, an Othodox wedding ceremony was allowed to take place after the Catholic ceremony.
    If fact, there were a total of three ceremonies: there was a Catholic wedding in a Catholic church in Athens (that’s when the canonical marriage took place); then the prince and princess went to the Spanish Embassy, where a civil wedding ceremony took place before the Spanish Ambassador, creating the marriage contract in the eyes of Spanish civil law); and finally there was the Orthodox Wedding in the Orthodox Cathedral, a religious wedding also valid for civil purposes under the then existing laws of Greece.

Under the Spanish Constitution, a Regent is only appointed by Parliament when there is no one prince or princess in the order of succession capable of discharging it.
    So, if Juan Carlos had asked for his incapacity to be faked so that he could preserve his conscience (as did King Baldouin of Belgium) King Juan Carlos would only be passing the problem to the hands of the next generation, namely, to Prince Felipe, Prince of Asturias and heir apparent to the Crown, who would become the Regent.

    Too bad the king sacrificed kids for his career. And too bad the bishops looked the other way. And too bad people are still defending this pro-abortion activity because he “had” to sign the pro-abortion law. No one “has” to sign a bill that legalizes the slaughter of the innocents. No one.

    Regarding the update. That is patently false. Queen Sofia abandoned Orthodoxy in 1962 when she converted to Roman Catholicism. It was widely publicized at the time because she converted on a yacht off the Greek coast so that she would not offend the Orthodox by converting on Greek ground.
    Since she converted in 1962, this would mean that she is intimately familiar with the form of reception of Holy Communion that the Holy Father wishes.

    I have NEVER before heard that Her Majesty didn’t convert to Catholicism. I find the claim highly dubious.
    As for her reception of Holy Communion, we don’t know if she has difficulty with her knees. I’m willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. Also, she was clearly seated at a higher level than where the Pope was standing, adding to the difficulty. Lots of people who DON’T know the circumstances are being uncharitable to a woman who has distinguished herself as a fierce defender of the Church and Her moral teachings.

    It seems to me that if HRH Queen Sophia had been kneeling, the Holy Father would have had a difficult time communicating her. I think her mouth would have been quite a reach up for him, and perhaps look rather undignified for HIM. She showed kindness in doing what she did.     It’s interesting that almost all the attention’s focused on Queen Sophia. Watching the Mass on EWTN, I was certainly startled by the Queen bending over instead of kneeling; but I was shocked at the King not receiving Communion. Saying he must have done it for personal reasons ( i.e. that he’s in a state of mortal sin although everyone’s being too polite to say so) doesn’t cut it. He wasn’t attending the Mass as a private individual; he was attending it as the Monarch of Spain and that makes his action political as well. He knew he would be attending the Mass and that the spotlight of the world would be on him. Common sense dictates that a Catholic who’s a Head of State would get himself to Confession to ensure that he would be able to publicly receive Communion.
    Of course, there’s another explanation (speculation alert) – that the Vatican asked him not to receive Communion. Why would they do that? Think about it – Juan Carlos, a Catholic, signed pro-abortion legislation into law. Isn’t the Church asking pro-abortion politicians who promote and pass pro-abortion laws to refrain from receiving Communion? And isn’t this because the Church needs to ensure that the faithful are not led to believe that abortions are okay, which they could easily think if the Church takes no action against these politicians? And wouldn’t that be the case if King Juan Carlos received Communion, which would cause a scandal among faithful Spanish Catholics?

    Regarding the distribution of Communion to the royals on a higher platform. I absolutely agree with you. By the way, I believe we can resort to the rite for the “Benediction and Coronation of a King” found in the pre-conciliar Roman Pontifical to understand how a King would receive Communion at Mass, or at least, during his own Coronation Mass, in pre-Vatican II times.
    The “ordo” contains a few rubrical prescription regarding the placement of the Royal Throne in the Church. The King’s throne is to be raised on a platform with steps, but it should not be set higher than the highest step of the Altar.
    For the reception of Communion, the Celebrant (who always has to be a Metropolitan, and as such is identified in the rubrics as “the Metropolitan”) does not go to the King’s throne.
    Rather, the King (already having removed the Crown since the beggining of the preface), would descend from his Throne, go before the Altar, and ascend its steps until the last, highest step. The King would then kneel on the highest step of the Altar to receive Communion. The Metropolitan, being on the Altar (i.e., above the higest step that leads to it, and thus, being higher than the King, would turn towards the King. The King, on his knees, would then kiss the right hand of the Metropolitan, and then receive Communion. After that, the King would purify himself with a chalice received from the Metropolitan (I guess that purification is needed because the King kissed the hand of the Metropolitan before the Metropolitan’s abulition), and would rise, descend the steps of Altar and return to his Throne.
    “Postquam Metropolitanus se de Corpore et Sanguine, quem totum sumere debet, communicaverit, Rex, detecto capite de thalamo suo accedit ad altare, coram quo, in supremo gradu, genuflectit, et Metropolitanus conversus ad Regem, ipsum communicat. Rex, priusquam communionem sumat, osculatur manum dexteram Metropolitani, et sumpta communione, ex calice de manu Metropolitani se purificat, et purificatus ad thalamum suum revertitur.”
